What Options Do You Have For A Thrift Drain Cleaner?

thrift drain cleanerClogged drains are not just a nuisance; they can cause inconvenience and further damage to the entire plumbing system in your home if not dealt with properly.

Even without any plumbing skills, you can easily – and frugally – fix clogged drains and prevent clogs from happening again. But first, you have to know what may be causing your drains to clog.

There are a lot of things that causes clogged drains. First on the list are grease, hair and debris build up. Over time, pieces of soap and other debris accumulate in the drain hole, slowing down the flow of water and eventually stopping water flow altogether.

You can fix clogged drains and prevent clogs and foul smells on the cheap. Here are some DIY drain pipe cleaning tips to try:

1.       Remove and clean the drain stopper

Remove the stopper and check for damage or blockage. Clear the drain stopper of any debris and then place it back into the drain opening.

2.       Use plunger

If simply cleaning the stopper does not solve the problem, try using a drain plunger. The first thing to do is to remove the pop-up drain. Then seal up the seal up the overflow drain using a wet cloth. You can increase the suction power of your drain plunger by rubbing a handful of petroleum jelly on the rim of the plunger. Put the plunger over the sink drain, and plunge up and down rapidly, repeating several times. Pour water down the sink, then repeat as necessary.

3.       Use Baking Soda and Vinegar

Another cheap yet effective way to clear a clogged drain is using baking soda and vinegar. The first thing to do is to run boiling hot water down your drain. Throw in about a handful of baking soda, and wait for a few minutes. Mix 1 cup of vinegar with 1 cup hot water and pour it down the drain. If you have a drain plug, it’s best to cover the drain hole to keep the reaction from going up into the sink. Wait for about 10 minutes then run a pot of boiling water to flush down clogs.

That’s it- very easy and environment friendly. This method is a perfect solution for slow draining sink but is not intended to fix an extremely problematic drain.

How To Dissolve Grease In Drain Pipe In Coral Gables FL

Plumber Teaching Apprentice To Fix Kitchen Sink In HomeAside from hair, food particles, and other debris, did you know that grease buildup is also a major cause for clogged drains? That’s right, the greasy, fatty residue from your dirty dishes tend to accumulate and solidify in your drains. What happens next? A drain that can no longer funnel liquid, sink backups, and all that smelly, dirty business. The common drain cleaners you use for unclogging and dissolving hair won’t cut it either.

Before you take any steps, it’s important to find out which drain cleaners are suitable for your kitchen and pipes. Remember, these are harsh chemicals you’re dealing with and you don’t want to cause more problems in the long run. Read up and consult professionals at your local hardware store for cleaners that won’t damage your pipes and your fixtures.

But first, how does it happen? What can we do to prevent grease from building up in our drains?

Here’s The Terrible Thing That Happens When You Pour Grease Down The Drain

The fats in the grease and oil from your kitchen mix with the other chemicals in the sewers and form nasty conglomerations of chemicals that can build up and block the pipes that take our dirty water to the wastewater treatment plant.

According to a recent review of the subject, these fat and oil buildups caused about 47% of the up to 36,000 sewer overflows that happen annually in the U.S.

Here’s how that goes down.

As you can see, grease buildup isn’t just something that threatens to wreck havoc in your kitchen pipes. Accumulated grease is also a big problem for main sewage systems. This often-overlooked threat is a major concern for everyone. Proper disposal of greasy waste is an important thing for everyone to learn.

Prevention is a hundred times better than the cure. To avoid having dangerous buildup in your system, try disposing of oil the same way you dispose of solid trash. After cooking a heavily fried or fatty meal, dump the oil in a jar or pan and allow it to solidify then dispose as you would of solid trash. Remember, you need to watch what goes down in your drain to stop other things from going back up.

Now that you’re aware of the dangers of having grease down your drains, it’s time to see what you can do about it.

3. When you’re ready to start the repair, locate the decorative cap that’s usually situated in the faucet handle. Once you’ve removed it, you will uncover a screw. Loosen it with the use of your screwdriver.

4. After removing the screw, pull the faucet’s handle up to uncover the valve stem.

Here’s an article that will help you find the right 24 hour plumber for your needs.

How To Choose An Emergency Plumber

We spend countless hours in our lives planning family vacations, the birth of our children, parties, shopping lists, you name it! We usually know down to the smallest side dish what is going to be on our table for Christmas dinner.

But how much time have you spent planning what you’re going to do when your sewer backs up? When the water heater leaks? When your boiler heat goes out? The definition of an emergency is: A serious, unexpected, and often dangerous situation requiring immediate action. By definition, it is difficult to plan for an emergency.

According to Angie’s List, it is important that you know who you’re talking with. It is essential that you have an idea about the company’s reputation and expertise before transacting with them. You also have to be careful about getting quotations over the phone because more often than not, they are not accurate. Obviously, it is better to ask the plumber to check on the problem personally for him to be able to identify the problem, its cause/s and solution/s. Last but not the least, you have to check reviews about the plumber’s work. Browse the internet or go to the company’s Facebook page to learn about their previous customers’ experiences. Anyway, you should know that it might take the plumber some time before he arrives at your doorstep. With that being said, it is important that you know what to do while waiting for the guy. Here’s an informative article you should read.

What To Do During Plumbing Emergencies

During plumbing emergencies, the first step is to stop the flow of water immediately. Do this by turning off the main water shutoff valve or the shutoff valve for the particular fixture or appliance. You and each member of your family should know the location of these shutoff valves.

Locating the main water shutoff valve is discussed this link. Shutoff valves for fixtures and appliances can usually be found underneath sinks and toilets and behind clothes washers, water heaters and other appliances.

If the emergency is limited to a specific appliance or fixture, look for its shutoff valve and close the valve by turning clockwise. Turn off the main shutoff valve if the problem is a leaking pipe or if there is no shutoff valve for the particular fixture or appliance.

How To Install An Instant Hot Water Heater In Broward FL

instant hot water heater in Key Biscayne FLThe tankless water heater is continuously gaining popularity among home and business owners alike. Because of its capability to provide hot water in an instant without consuming too much electricity or gas, this heating system is gradually becoming the better choice. If you are interested in installing one for your home, follow these simple steps.

1. Make sure that you have a vent ready for the water heater. The vent pipe should be extended outside and must also be run downward to avoid contact between the heater and elements such as rain water or snow. Guarantee that your vent installation meets building code requirements. Also verify if the model you’re setting up needs another pipe for fresh air. Some of them do.

2. When your vent pipe has already been installed, mount your instant hot water heater. If you’re going to mount it up in concrete or brick walls, you’ll have to use wooden beams to support the appliance. Once you’ve already placed the joist, attach a backboard for the water heater.

3. Line the heating unit up and screw it in place. Make sure that it’s in perfect alignment with the vent pipe.

4. Attach the water supply lines which will be responsible in providing water to the heater. If you’ll use copper pipes, make sure that you’ll clean both ends with an emery cloth. Apply soldering flux at one end of the pipe and insert it into the fitting.

5. Torch the fitting for about ten seconds. If the metal’s already hot, apply the solder. Do the same thing on both sides.

6. If you’re installing a gas water heater, you’ll need to have a T-valve installed to a gas line. Once that is set up properly, it must be run from the gas valve to the heating unit. Note that there should also be a shut off valve attached to the gas line before it is connected to the sediment trap. When you’re done with this step, check for gas leaks. If there aren’t any, turn the water heater on and verify that you’re already getting hot water from your taps.

How To Find Energy Efficient Toilets In West Palm Beach FL

energy efficient toilets in West Palm Beach FLAre you getting tired of paying high monthly water bills? Do you want to cut the expense down to something more reasonable? How about switching to an energy-efficient toilet? I heard they’re better than regular or high-flow toilets that are common in our homes. Using them would be practical and wise for homeowners like you. And I quote,

“It might surprise you that out of all of the things in your house that use water, your toilet is by far the thirstiest. In a 2010 conference presentation, Northeastern University professor Vladimir Novotny, noted that without water conservation, toilets account for about 26 percent of water in U.S. single-family homes. More-efficient and better-functioning flushers can significantly reduce the water wasted when you visit the loo. Novotny estimated such conservation methods would reduce toilet water use to only about 10 percent of the total.” (Read more here.)

So according to the article, water consumption will drop down to about 10 percent if you’ll use an energy-efficient john. If you read the entire article I shared above, you have learned that there are also alternatives to low-flow toilets. For instance, you may also look into getting a dual-flush toilet because it doesn’t utilize a full gallon of water just to get rid of solid waste. Anyway, if you are interested in getting a new john for your home, check out some recommended units that are not only water-saving but are also eco-friendly.

Best Options for High-Efficiency Toilets

With water shortages becoming more common, numerous states and nations are enacting regulations to conserve water. The efforts have centered primarily on water efficiency — ways to meet our needs using the least amount of water. One popular approach is the installation of high-efficiency toilets to replace old, water-intensive ones, which consume as much as 7 gallons per flush. If your home has an old toilet, it makes sense — economically and environmentally — to replace it with a water-conserving model that will use about 55 percent less water than a conventional toilet.

I hope that my blog today has given you enough tips on how to find energy efficient toilets in West Palm Beach FL. If you need a more detailed guide, check out this toilet buying guide. What Is An Enzyme Drain Cleaner in Golden Beach FL For?

enzyme drain cleaner in Golden Beach FL

Cleaning your drains is a major homeowner responsibility. It should be cleared of sticky waste particles in order to prevent clogs and other related plumbing issues. However, you should always consider using natural drain cleaners instead of harsh chemicals because the latter may just damage your pipes in the end. For my blog today, I would like to introduce enzyme drain cleaners to you.

What are they?

An enzyme drain cleaner is a natural cleaning agent that works by spreading bacteria which eat away on organic particles such as food wastes inside the pipes. You should remember though that enzymes are not really intended to get rid of clogs. They are only efficient when it comes to cleaning drainpipes.

What are the advantages of using them?

First of all, enzymatic drain cleaners won’t harm your pipes. Since they are only made up of concentrated enzymes and bacteria cultures, they won’t be able to cause damage on your tubes unlike toxic cleaners. They are also non-corrosive which means that your pipes won’t get rusty because of their usage. Last but not the least, they are cheaper than other cleaning supplies.

What about disadvantages?

An enzyme drain cleaner is not that tough when it comes to unclogging drains. As mentioned earlier, it is better used as a cleaning agent than as an unclogger. Another disadvantage is that it takes a lot longer for this kind of cleaner to work its magic. Don’t keep a lot in stock because it has a pretty short shelf life. And while it is safe to use in your drains, know that extra care should be given because once it is inhaled, ingested or allowed inside the body, your health will be compromised.

I hope that you learned a lot about the use of an enzyme drain cleaner in Golden Beach FL. Also learn about other natural drain cleaning methods to find out which is the best suited for your needs. Why Do You Need A Drain Plumber In North Bay Village FL

drain plumber in North Bay Village FLHave you noticed any problem with your drains lately? I’m referring to clogged sinks and toilets; backflows and foul smell coming from your drains. When these problems are so recurrent to the point that you experience them every week, you should already consider getting help from a professional drain plumber. But before you go schedule a service call, read this article first to get to know more information about sewer line clogs.

What are the warning signs of a main sewer line clog?

The average homeowner likely knows that sewer lines help transport waste water from the home to underground sewer mains. Other than that, most homeowners give little thought to their sewer lines.

But when there’s a problem with the sewer line, homeowners tend to take notice. A sewer line clog could lead to raw sewage backing up out of the drains, which could lead to significant damage to the home.

According to Angie’s List, one of the symptoms of a sewer clog is the presence of a weird toilet sound as if there’s a coffee pot percolating. You should also notice water puddles on your floor drain in the basement. Most of importantly, you will find that backups are already recurrent. All these are signaling the necessity of having your sewers cleaned by professionals. Here’s a quick look at what they actually do and how they do it.

How to Fix a Residential Sewer Line Clog

It’s vexing when a toilet, bathtub or sink drain clogs, but you’ve got a real problem when it happens to a sewer line. An obstruction in the sewer affects all the plumbing fixtures in the house, and if it gets bad enough, you may find sewage backing out of some of your drains. Clearing a blocked sewer usually isn’t a job you can do yourself. It takes professional expertise and equipment.

Sewer lines are typically 6 inches or more in diameter, and it takes more than a buildup of paper or loose debris to clog them. Most sewer clogs are the result of the incursion of tree roots into the pipes. The roots are attracted to the warmth and moisture of the sewer lines and send feelers through tiny cracks or loose joints. Once inside, the roots engorge themselves on the readily available nutrients. Before long, debris collects on the roots and blocks the water flow. The obstruction builds more quickly as the water flow slows and it becomes easier for debris to settle.

I hope that you learned all the important reasons why hiring a drain plumber in North Bay Village FL is vital. Hassle-Free Shower Tub Faucet Repair In South Palm Beach FL

shower tub faucet repair in South Palm Beach FL

Do you have a tub faucet that’s connected to an existing shower? Just like any other faucet you have at home, this type is also prone to plumbing issues. Sooner or later, it will leak, get corroded or its threads will just wear out.  That’s normal since it’s always exposed to water. So if you do have a shower tub spout that needs repair, you can simply do the repair project on your own. All you have to is prepare some plumbing tools, the required replacement unit and work on it. To remove the damaged faucet, follow this DIY guide.

How to Remove an Existing Shower & Tub Faucet

The faucet on a combination tub and shower consists of a tub spout over the tub, a handle or handles and a shower head. The handles turn the water on and off, and water is dispensed from the tub spout or the shower head when the water is turned on. If your faucet looks worn and outdated, replace it with a new, modern faucet. Simply remove the old faucet in order to install a new faucet that suits your décor and personal style.

It looks pretty easy to remove a broken tap. You’ll just need your reliable putty knife, screwdriver, hex key wrench and pipe wrench to complete this part of the project successfully. Now once you’ve removed the old faucet, you now have to install the new unit. Make sure that you follow the steps in this DIY guide.

Installing a Shower or Tub Faucet

Installing separate 3/4-inch lines to supply the shower ensures good water pressure and protects from temperature changes when another faucet is turned on or the toilet tank refills. Tap into the cold and hot water lines as close to the water heater as possible.

Choose the tub or shower faucet before you run pipes. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for plumbing the faucet. If your faucet does not have integrated shutoff valves, install shutoff valves in the lines to the valve.

Assuming an 18-inch-tall tub, position the faucet about 28 inches above the floor for a tub, about 48 inches for a shower. You may want to compromise and position it about 38 inches above the floor.

Is Flapperless Toilet Installation In Miami FL Worth Your Money?

flapperless toilet installation in Miami FL

Image courtesy of John Kasawa at

I bet you have the regular type of faucet at home. You know, the one with a tank that’s packed with several parts inside? Yes, that’s the regular toilet. Have you heard about the flapperless toilet though? It’s a new type of ceramic throne that has been making the buzz in the market nowadays. If you still don’t have any idea how it works, read this informative article I got from one the best know-how websites I love.

What Is a Flapperless Toilet?

Standard toilets often leak when a component becomes worn out, including toilet “flappers.” New toilet designs use the “tipping bucket” concept instead of flappers.

A “flapperless” toilet is one without a rubber flapper and seal in the toilet tank to control the flow of water from the tank into the bowl. A gravity flush toilet uses a “tipping bucket” to control water flow. Water fills a bucket at the top of the tank. The flush lever tips the bucket and the water flows from the tank into the bowl.

So according to the article, it’s still a gravity-type toilet after all.  The only difference is that instead of having a flapper to monitor the flow of water into the bowl, this type of ceramic throne simply flushes down waste materials with the help of a tipping bucket that’s installed inside its tank. Advantages were also noted in the write-up. For instance, leaking becomes less likely to occur. The author also pointed out that using this type of toilet entails lesser repair expenses. Well the big question is, “Is it really worth it to have one?” Here’s an interesting forum you might want to join.

Flapperless – whats the deal?

Discovered this toilet with a internal trough that flips to dump water and was intrigued…. NO sweating and NO flapper. Then a search brought me to a very detailed toilet test done by a government agency. I recall the first three best as Toto ultramaxes, and then this Niagara flapperless – rated higher than the other Toto’s, and I found it delivered for about 180$ online.

It looks a bit ugly, but I see it as a great landlord toilet and other than master bath unit. This test also had really surprising results from flapper replacements that took many 1.6 flushes to 5.5 gallons. This tipping trough cannot vary in its flush gallonage… and based on test results gives a agressive flush from the quick water drop. Am I looking at the next gold standard in toilets?

Hoping that this article about flapperless toilet installation in Miami FL has helped you make a decision as to whether or not you should go for flapperless. Tips When Experiencing A Clogged Sewer Line In Davie FL

clogged sewer lineYour sewer lines are essential parts of your home’s plumbing. They are the pipes that are responsible for transporting all the soiled water and waste materials from your drains and fixtures into your own septic system or the public sewage system where you are connected. Because of the exposure of these pipes to different kinds of substances — grease, scum, dirt, human waste, mineral deposits and sediments — they are prone to clogging. When substances cling on to the walls of your pipes, they’ll eventually build up, clog the system and prevent the continuous and smooth flow of sewage. Foreign objects that accidentally go down the drains like toys, plastics and non-biodegradable materials also cause blockages.  But how can you tell if the main sewer line is already clogged up? Here are some symptoms according to Angie’s List!

What are the warning signs of a main sewer line clog?

The average homeowner likely knows that sewer lines help transport waste water from the home to underground sewer mains. Other than that, most homeowners on a sewer system probably don’t think about – or even want to think about – what goes on in their sewer lines.

When there’s a problem with the line, though, homeowners need to take notice. A sewer line clog could lead to raw sewage backing up out of the drains, which could lead to significant damage to the home.

So according to this renowned website, your main sewer line is probably clogged if you experience back-ups in your tub while trying to drain your bathroom sink. So instead of the soiled water getting flushed down the sink drain completely, it goes up and out of your tub. Slow draining is also one warning sign you shouldn’t ignore. Anyway, to verify the problem and have it fixed ASAP, it will be better to call professionals. If you want to learn how this issue is resolved, check this article out!

Anyway, if you’re adequately skilled and are looking forward to doing the project on your own, here’s a compilation of tips you should know.

The best place to start with any remodeling project is the budget. Not only will it have a big impact on the type of materials you select for your bathroom renovation, it will also help you set the boundaries of your design. Knowing what you can really afford to spend will make it a lot easier to decide what items you want to replace and where you need to get creative!

Going “green” is not only good for the environment; it’s also good for you. Green products have great design, tend to function better, which lowers utility bills, and they’re also chemical-free, making them better for your health. Having an eco-friendly approach to remodeling isn’t just about buying new products, doing something “green” can be as simple as painting a cabinet instead of tossing it in a landfill.

Seafood Barbecue Tips To Make Your Dinner More Festive!

seafood barbecueSeafood is truly mouth-watering especially when they’re cooked on the grill. Barbecuing allows the food items to get cooked thoroughly without getting rid of its natural juices. One tip though, you should be very careful not to overcook them! Seafood is different from red meat such as pork or beef because they can easily flake off or burn when cooked over direct heat. Shell food, on the other hand, requires different level of handling since their meat has better and thicker protection against high temperature. Anyway, to give you more tips, here’s a valuable article you should read!

Tips When Barbecuing Seafood

Fish, shrimp and prawns, crab and lobster are all delicious when cooked on the barbecue. The challenge with grilling seafood is to make sure you don’t overcook it … you want it to be tender inside with a tasty grilled crust. BBQ seafood recipes are a great way to add some variety to your meal. Note, just because salmon is so popular on the barbecue, we have a separate section just for BBQ salmon recipes.

The article clearly pointed out the importance of watching over your seafood because they don’t only get cooked very fast but that they can also get rubbery, specifically in the case of squids. Compared to red meat, fish and other types of seafood don’t require long marinating hours. In fact, you can marinate them in as short as 15 minutes and they’ll end up still so flavorful. Instead of using sauces or marinades, you can also just rub them. Anyway, if you are looking for awesome recipes to try this weekend, then look no further because I’ll give you a delicious list. How To Become A Trainee Plumber In Key Biscayne FL

trainee plumber in Key Biscayne FLHave you ever thought about having a career in plumbing? Well, it is surely a job that pays well and at the same time, very fulfilling. Why? Well a lot of plumbers I know take pride of how their customers thank them whenever they resolve plumbing issues. It may not be as heroic as trying to rescue a person from a burning building but hey, receiving compliments and kind words from clients will make anyone feel happy. Now you have to remember though that the journey to being a certified, licensed plumber is not so easy after all. You’ll have to take courses and also undergo trainings for you to be able to practice your skills then finally take the long-awaited examination. But you might ask me what do trainee plumbers actually do? Read this news article that details the life of a plumbing apprentice!

What Does A Plumbing Apprentice Do?

THE LIFE OF a plumbing apprentice is split between on-the-job training and classroom work during the four-year program. Brian Whitehead, 18, entering his second year this month, is in school two evenings a week from September to May, and on the job for 40 to 55 hours a week at Jim Steinle’s Atomic Plumbing & Drain Cleaning in Virginia Beach, Va. On the job, Whitehead rides with one of Steinle’s mechanics everyday.

“The mechanics here are great, and I treat them as if they are my boss,” Whitehead says. “Most of them are really good at teaching. They want to see if I really listened to what they had to say.”

Reading the trainee’s life, are you still up for it? If you are, then you should really condition your mind into completing the apprenticeship. There’s no sense in even finding a place to intern if you won’t stick to the end. Most people who are not that determined find apprenticeship a bit stressful and difficult and that’s why they quit. I hope you’re not one of them though. Anyway, if you are looking for places to become a trainee, here’s quick guide to help you out!

How to Get a Plumbing Apprenticeship

Individuals who want a career in plumbing will get the required education and experience by becoming a plumbing apprentice. An apprentice learns the plumbing trade by working with a licensed plumber or registered organization such as a union or a school. An apprenticeship involves classroom learning and on the job experience. Get a plumbing apprenticeship by joining a union or a trade school, or by working directly with a master plumber while taking classes.

Graduate from high school. To become a plumber’s apprentice, you will need a minimum of a high school diploma. Obtain a GED if you did not graduate from high school. Begin an apprenticeship when you turn 18 years of age. Some states will allow plumber’s apprentices to be as young as 17 as long as they have completed high school. Check with your local plumbers union on the age regulations in your area.

I hope that you learned the ins and outs of being a trainee plumber in Key Biscayne FL. If you are trying to start a career in plumbing, read my other articles to learn and practice your skills. A Handbook On Bathtub Plumbing In Boynton Beach FL

bathtub plumbing in Boynton Beach FLWhat’s your most favorite part in your bathroom? If you’ll ask me, I love the tub most! It provides a great deal of comfort whenever I take a relaxing bath! In fact, I spend an hour a day just lying down there, listening to music and rejuvenating in warm, aromatic bath. Definitely takes all the stresses of the day away! However, just the tub is used every day, its parts gradually deteriorate too. The tub may get chipped off. The faucet may start to get rusty and leak. The faucet knobs may suddenly get stuck. And so what will happen to your — err I mean “my” — me-time? To prepare for such plumbing problems, it will be very advantageous to know DIY plumbing. And that’s what I want to impart with you today. Read this article first to find out how your bathtub works!

Bathtub dimensions can vary. Before you buy, check the dimensions of a new tub so that it will fit in the same spot as the old one. Another consideration with very large tubs is whether you will be able to maneuver it through your home to the bathroom. Room to work is also important — especially in smaller bathrooms. It will sometimes be necessary to remove the other bathroom fixtures in order to remove an old bathtub and install a new one. Connecting the water supply to a bath is much the same as for a basin. The main difference when installing a bath is that it may be large and heavy, and access to the plumbing can be difficult.

If you read the article completely, you should now be quite familiar about the parts of the tub and how it actually works. Generally speaking, it consists of a faucet, gasket, retaining nut, overflow pipe, flexible connector, hot and cold water supply, waste outlet, trap and a drain. Knowing all these parts and having the skill to repair and replace them will save you not only a lot of money but also time. And with that said, let me share another online resource with you!

How to Remove, Repair or Replace a Bathtub

Bathtubs and showers sustain heavy use and are frequently scoured, so it’s not surprising they eventually need to be replaced. This section shows how to remove an old tub and install a new one, as well as how to install a tub or shower enclosure.

Some inspectors don’t require an inspection for fixture replacements. As long as no new drain or supply pipes are to be installed, no permit will be required. But check with your building department; this is a major job. It’s to your benefit to have an inspector sign off on it. If you are running new lines for a shower, be sure to schedule inspections.

Replacing a tub or installing a shower is a remodeling project, involving not only plumbing but also carpentry, wall repair, and perhaps tiling. Count the cost and prepare for all aspects of the job. Allow yourself plenty of time. Just patching and painting a wall can take several days.

Hassle-Free DIY Toilet Repair In Arnold CA

DIY toilet repair in Arnold CAYour toilet may be one of the most durable plumbing fixtures at home but that doesn’t mean that it will stay functional and beautiful over years of use. Just like any other fixture or appliance you have at home, the john is also prone to cracks, clogs, leaks and part malfunction. Fortunately, fixing a problem is no biggie! You just have to figure out what’s wrong with it (like what caused the clog or why the flush isn’t working) and apply hassle-free, DIY fixes! So for starters, let me share with you this online resource I found that tackles the proper way to troubleshoot toilets!

How To Troubleshoot Your Toilet

Before you do, though, consider tackling your home toilet repair job yourself. After all, the residential toilet consists of just two main parts: the water tank and the bowl. Any mechanical problems you’ll meet will be in the tank, because that’s where the plumbing is. The bowl has no moving parts and succumbs only to stoppage or seal failure at the closet flange, where it’s bolted to the floor.

Begin by removing the tank lid and setting it in a safe place (it’s probably made of vitreous china and may crack if dropped). If sluggishness or clogging isn’t a problem, flush the commode and watch what happens. Ideally, the stopper or flap ball will lift, releasing flush water to the bowl; simultaneously, as the water level in the tank drops, the float will drop, opening the ballcock valve to let fresh household water flow into the now-empty tank through a filler tube. At the same time, a refilltube refills the bowl’s reservoir through an overflow pipe.

I hope that you read the article from start to finish because it really points out several important aspects that will help you troubleshoot your toilet correctly. It is also worth noting that in order for you to check the parts and mechanisms of your ceramic throne, you also have to be knowledgeable about how it works. I mean, you can’t accurately figure out what’s wrong with any plumbing fixture or appliance without even knowing how it operates in the first place or what a specific part’s function is. Don’t worry though because I’ll be posting useful information about that topic on my next blog! Now moving on, let me share with you a list of the most common toilet problems you’ll encounter and how you can solve them. Here’s a useful article for your reference!

You may periodically hear your toilet begin to spontaneously refill, as though someone had flushed it. A toilet that cuts on and off by itself, or runs intermittently, has a problem that plumbers call a phantom flush. The cause is a very slow leak from the tank into the bowl. This problem is almost certainly caused by a bad flapper or flapper seat. The solution is to drain the tank and bowl, check and clean the flapper seat, and replace the flapper if it’s worn or damaged.

How Much To Remodel A Bathroom In Palm Beach County

how much to remodel a bathroom in Palm Beach CountyWe all want a bathroom that exudes comfort, convenience and of course — a pleasant appeal. And because of this very desire, homeowners like us resort to doing makeover projects to improve the functionality and look of our bathrooms. One of the factors that influence the implementation of remodeling plans is the cost of the project. Times are hard and we want to get more out of our hard-earned money. Do you agree? If you do, read on because I’m going to share with you some resources that answer the very question, “How much will you spend on a bathroom renovation?” In one article I read online,

“You want to remodel your bathroom, but you don’t want to break the bank, and that’s a distinct possibility with any home renovation project. Here’s the skinny on how fat your wallet needs to be to do the remodeling job that you want. And once you know what costs what, you can figure out which corners — or countertops — to cut.

According to Remodeling magazine’s 2005 Cost vs. Value Report, a mid-range bathroom remodel is approximately $10,499, higher or lower depending on where you live (and how you define mid-range). Redoing your bathroom will cost you less in the South and more in the West and Northeast. The report also estimates that such a job will recoup 102 percent of its cost at resale. So at least you know you’re not flushing money down the toilet. An upscale bathroom remodel is estimated to cost $26, 052 — a hefty jump in price — and to recoup about 93 percent of that on resale.” (See full article here.)

If you read the entire write-up I just quoted above, you learned that the cost of a bathroom makeover involves several factors: construction zone, labor, fixtures, the size of the bathroom, the materials and also the hours that it will take to complete the project. There’s no need to panic though because you can control how much you’ll shell out. You just have to choose the areas where you’ll focus on more. So to help you estimate the price of your dream toilet and bath, here’s another guide:

Bathroom remodeling guide: Trends and costs

The master bathroom is supposed to be your own private escape—a place to pamper yourself, to preen. So why are you always in such a hurry to leave yours? Maybe it’s the pink-and-white tiles. Or the perpetual beads of water on the ceiling. Or the way the entry door slams into the toilet. If your would-be sanctuary is a major sore spot, you’re not alone. Bathrooms are second only to the kitchen on people’s wish lists of rooms to remodel, especially since the current economy-induced deferred maintenance has pushed so many past their 20-year lifespan. “At that age, bathrooms really start to get tired,” says Art Donnelly, president of Legacy Design Build in Mount Sinai, New York. “Leaky toilets, grimy grout, loose tiles—you name it, it’s probably an issue.”

Given the complexity of bathrooms—multiple components in a compact space, not to mention all that water—doing the project right is a challenge. (See Remodeling Dos and Don’ts.) On a cost-per-square-foot basis, bathrooms are one of the most expensive spaces to remodel. But that doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune. That’s where Consumer Reports’ Bathroom Remodeling Guide comes in. Our product testers have spent months rating the latest toilets, sinks, countertops, and other bathroom essentials to separate the winners from the also-rans. We’ve also interviewed designers, contractors, and real estate pros nationwide to find out what to include—and what to skip—on your bathroom-remodel wish list.

The Tracy Plumber’s Handbook On The Parts Of A Toilet Tank

Tracy plumber’s handbook on the parts of a toilet tankYour toilet is one of the indispensable fixtures you have in your home. And in truth, it is also one of those that you have to take care of. Without proper use, cleaning and maintenance, it will surely give you a lot of headache. For instance, using it as a trashcan will eventually cause it to clog. But do you know that aside from the bowl itself, the tank also needs care and upkeep? It is made up of parts that may get damaged over time and when that happens, the toilet won’t function properly anymore. To be able to repair toilets, you have to also know how it works and get familiar with its parts. And that’s what I want to talk about today.

“The toilet is one of the simplest mechanical items in your home, and with a basic understanding of how it works, you can fix it yourself. Here are the main working parts of a toilet and some common problems, how to identify them, and a solution. Being able to properly diagnose a problem will get you well on your way to making the repair.” (See full article here.)

Now that you’re familiar with the parts of the toilet tank, you should then learn how to perform do-it-yourself repairs and replacement. Sometimes, there are damages that require a simple part replacement. But if that won’t work, then you should consider getting a new tank or a new toilet per se. So let me share with you this awesome guide on replacing tank parts. Here it is:

Turn off the water to the toilet tank by turning off the toilet stop or closet stop, which is by the base. Keep turning the handle clockwise until it shuts off. Drain the tank by pushing the handle down and holding it until the water goes all the way down. Hold the handle until no more water goes down the hole. There will still be about 1 inch of water in the tank. Wipe all the water out using a sponge.

Use a small adjustable wrench to disconnect the toilet stop nut (Image 1). Disconnect the tank from the bowl by removing the bolts found inside the bottom of the tank. Using a large screwdriver to support the head on the bolt, then turn the nut under the tank with an adjustable wrench (Image 2) until it is possible to remove the entire bolt from the tank. Repeat the process on all the bolts.

The Importance of Reading Tankless Water Heater Reviews By West Palm Beach Plumbers

tankless water heater reviewsAre you in the lookout for a new hot water heater for your home? Have you thought about going tankless? Hot water heaters have long since become integral appliances in residences worldwide. These machines make our lives a lot easier, convenient and comfortable. Think about waking up in a cold morning to prepare for work. It’s winter and the water is too cold, making it hard for you to take a bath. Fortunately, you no longer have to boil water in pots like we used to do years ago. You just have to turn the hot water shower knob on and voila! Enjoy a warm bath! However, I have to remind you that hot water heaters are costly investments. And for this reason, you have to read tankless water heater reviews before making a purchase. I want to quote this article I found online,

“Before buying a new one heater, it will be better to know customers reviews, so you will know what appliance is the best and where to buy it. You will find useful reports and short reviews made by people who have bought such heaters. So, before purchasing the appliance, don’t forget to check reports and find out whether owners were satisfied by the heater and its services. Then you can make final decision to buy it or find a different one.” (See full article here.)

If you read the article completely, it pointed out the many benefits of having a water heater at home. And in the case of a tankless heater, the unit doesn’t stock hot water but instead heat the liquid on demand. So expect lower electricity consumption and save more space with a spontaneous heating system. Anyway, going back on reviews, here’s a sample I found on the internet:

Best Tankless Water Heater Reviews

Tankless water heaters don’t take up nearly as much space as storage-tank water heaters (and are easier to install). That’s because they don’t include a storage tank at all; instead, they heat water on demand. Depending on the model, tankless water heaters run on natural gas, propane or electricity, and many are designed to be energy efficient. For example, our top pick, the Ecosmart ECO 27  (Est. $500) , boasts 99.8 percent efficiency and a flow rate of two to four gallons per minute.

The biggest consideration with the Ecosmart ECO 27 is in colder climates; it has difficulty producing the proper water temperature for showers and similar household needs. It’s designed for use in climates where the temperature (normally) does not drop below 37 degrees Fahrenheit, which excludes many areas in the Northern U.S.

I hope that you now understand the importance of reading tankless water heater reviews by Palm Beach plumbers. Your Most Reputed Mono Vista Plumber Shares Tips On Unclogging Toilets With The Plunger

Mono Vista plumberThe only thing worse than not getting any water from your shower right in the middle of a bath is flushing down your toilet and finding out that it stops halfway on the job. You’re left with unwanted content that gross you out and drive you panicky to the point of flushing it twice or thrice until your ceramic throne totally overflows. Now that sounds like a bad way to start the day, right? So in case your toilet gets clogged, you should know how to handle such an annoying and inconvenient situation. Here’s a guide to help you out!

1. Never flush your toilet twice or more. Flushing it down the first time and learning that it’s clogged already tells you that the content won’t disappear anymore. If you’ll flush it multiple times, it will overflow and you surely do not want that to happen.

2. Spread newspapers or rags on the floor surrounding your toilet to protect your floor. Wear your rubber gloves to keep your hands clean.

3. Shut off your toilet’s water supply to make sure that your bathroom won’t flood.

4. To avoid suffocating from foul smell and then later on finding yourself unconscious, ensure that there’s good air circulation in your bathroom.

5. Place a few drops of liquid cleanser or dish soap in the toilet and pour about half a bucket of hot water in it. Let it sit around for a few minutes to soften the clog. If there’s no change in the water level, get your handy flange plunger.

6. Pour some hot water on your plunger to soften it up and make it stick to the toilet easily.

7. Press the plunger down slowly, ensuring that it covers the entire hole. Remember that it should be submerged in water.

8. Start pulling the plunger up and pushing it down in a steady, constant pace to create a suction. Never be too aggressive while doing this. Otherwise, you’ll just clog your toilet even more.

9. If the clog is still there, pour more water on the toilet and repeat the process. Do this about three to four times but if the clog won’t go away, you might need to pull whatever’s blocking your toilet out using an auger.

Hopefully, this guide will help you unclog your toilet using your handy plunger. If you think you’ve done everything you can and still cannot get rid of the problem, just call your trusted Mono Vista plumber in Tuolumne County! Your Friendly Tracy Plumber On Hot Water Heater Repair

Tracy plumberHot water heaters are reliable, durable and long-lasting appliances that are worth your every penny. Having one at home will bring you a lot of convenience. Think about taking a shower on a cold winter day. Think about needing a pail of hot water for cleaning. What about for cooking? Or for home care? Or for just about any activity where you’ll need hot water ASAP? A hot water heating system is truly a great investment that you should also take care of properly. It’s not going to work smoothly forever because it’s also prone to malfunction. The only thing that you can do is to provide consistent and proper maintenance to lengthen its lifespan. If you use this equipment properly, chances are you’ll be enjoying its benefits for 15 years or more. Now in case you experience problems with it, let us share with you some troubleshooting and repair tips to make sure you’ll know what to do.

1. If you get rusty or rust-colored hot water from your taps, it’s possible that the anode rod in your tank has already corroded. To verify the problem, simply inspect the rod and once you see rust on it, it needs to go away and get replaced.

2. Weird sounds such as whining and popping that come from your water heater system may indicate a build-up of sediments in the tank. This is normal and is exactly the reason why you need to flush it regularly. What you have to do is check the bottom of the tank. Once you see that mineral deposits have already accumulated there, you have to flush the water heater and refill it. Also look over your water softener and make sure that it’s still okay.

3. Smelly water is also another water heating problem that you should watch out for. When this happens, the water usually smells like rotten eggs which may indicate that there’s some sort of bacterial infection in the system. To get over this issue, you have to flush the tank and then fill it up with about two 2 pints of 3% hydrogen peroxide solution. Let the solution sit in for two hours before you refill your tank. If this doesn’t solve the problem, try replacing the anode rod.

4. A leak in your water heater may be caused by different factors: overheating; a malfunctioning T&P valve; holes in the tank; loose pipes or connections. Verify the source of the problem by checking each and every part of the water heater. You should also reduce the thermostat to prevent overheating. Note that if the tank has holes, it should already be replaced.

5. Now what will you do if you don’t get hot water at all? Inspect the pilot light and make sure that it is powered on.  Verify that the thermostat is set at the right temperature. Make sure that the water supply lines are connected properly. Look for signs of leaking and broken pipes. When basic troubleshooting doesn’t help, it’s time to call your trusted plumber!

A Modesto Plumber’s Guide On Toilet Replacement

Modesto plumberDo you want a new toilet that has a better flush mechanism? Is your current ceramic throne worn out? Does it have cracks on it? Won’t it flush anymore? Is it no longer pleasing to the eyes? It really doesn’t matter whether you want to replace your toilet for aesthetic or functional reasons. It is your privilege as homeowner to decide on improvement projects to make your home even more comfortable for you and your loved ones. So if you are planning on getting rid of your current john, let us share with you this easy guide on toilet replacement!

Tools & Materials

* new toilet bowl

* rags

* plunger

* adjustable wrench

* hacksaw

* putty knife

* wax seal

* slip-joint pliers

* rubber gloves

* sponge

1. Gather your materials. Make sure that you’ll wear rubber gloves to protect your hands

2. Turn off the water supply. Flush the toilet to remove the water that’s left in the system. There will still be a little left inside the bowl so you’ll have to use the plunger to flush it down the drain. Meanwhile, use a bucket and sponge to remove excess water inside the tank. Once done, you’ll have to disconnect the supply line from the base of the toilet tank.

3. Detach the toilet by unscrewing the nuts that connect it to the water supply line. Remove the caps and nuts found on the base of the toilet which are responsible for securing it to the floor. If they’re rusty and won’t let go, cut them off using the hacksaw.

4. Using your putty knife, pry up the throne and get rid of the wax seal that was used to keep it in place. Rock the toilet to loosen it up. Lift it away and place it on some rags. Get rid of the wax gasket and block the drain with another rag to avoid letting the sewer gas seep out.

5. Attach a new wax gasket for the new toilet. Make sure that the flange is still in good condition and that it is secured in place. It’s supposed to connect to a collar that will go through the floor.

6. Replace the wax ring. Doing so will seal the connection and prevent sewer gas from escaping out of the drain.

7. Apply caulk on the base of the new bowl and then remove the rag from the drain opening. Place the new toilet in position, allowing it to sit on top of the flange. Press down. Some even sit on the toilet to squeeze it tightly in place.

8. Tighten the nuts and caps but never overdo it as it may crack the toilet. Insert the tank bolts and gently position the tank over the bowl. Secure the nuts and caps and verify that the tank is level. If it is, put the lid on.

9. Connect the water supply line and tighten the compression valve. Once done, turn the valve on and let the tank fill. At this time, you might want to apply caulk along the edges of the new toilet to make it look pleasing to the eyes. Smoothen it out. You might want to wait a day before you use the new toilet. Test it and if something doesn’t work as it is supposed to, seek the help of a professional plumber.

We hope that this guide is helpful enough to assist you in replacing your toilet. Plumbing company owners make sure that they are hiring the best and qualified plumbing contractors that would build up their reputation. Most importantly, so they can have retainers for long term income.

Plumbing Stereotype

“Hot’s on the left, cold’s on the right and shit don’t run up hill.”

That’s what my Father told me when I said I didn’t want to help him with plumbing when I said it would be too hard. He assured me those three things were the only three I needed to know in order to start my, for lack of a better word, internship. Hard work, long hours, exposure to the elements — Some of them man made if you catch my drift — was what I to look forward to. ‘Great,’ I thought.

Although licensed plumbing professionals in Miami FL have to undergo intensive internships and preparation, there are those who are not qualified working in the field. These contractors have lower fees, but aren’t really qualifed to handle many plumbing tasks. That’s when homeowners get into trouble, as it necesitates a rework of the task by a certified plumber.

How to Choose a Plumber

The best time to choose a plumber is before you experience a plumbing emergency. Unfortunately, most people facing an emergency have very little time to research a plumber. When the toilet springs a leak or the basement ceiling is wet from a broken pipe upstairs, finding help is imperative.

The next time you run across a plumbing contractor give him the Kudos he deserves. When you have a plumbing issue be sure to call a qualified and certified plumber with references. Any licensed plumber is proud of his certification and of the jobs he has performed. He will be glad to furnish references.

Your Stockton Plumber Talks About Backflow Prevention Devices & Their Importance

Stockton plumberHave you ever experienced getting contaminated water from your taps at home? Have any of your loved ones gotten sick because of bacteria ingestion from your drinking water? If your answer to these questions is “no”, then you must read on and learn all about backflow and its prevention.

What is a backflow?

A backflow is the detrimental reversal of the flow of liquid, solid or gaseous substances from its intended direction which is away from your supply of drinking water. For instance, a backflow happens when wastewater that’s supposed to go to your septic tank or to the sewer system flows into the pipes of your home’s potable water. And this isn’t something to disregard rather a serious problem to attend to right away. Why? Well, a backflow causes water contamination which is not only inconvenient to begin with but also entails health problems. If you aren’t aware that the water you use for cooking and for drinking is already contaminated, you or your loved ones at home may ingest bacteria that can cause diseases. And again, it’s annoying because you won’t be able to use the smelly, yellowish — or sometimes black — water when taking a bath, brushing your teeth or even washing your dishes.

What is a backflow preventer?

Now the good news is, there are backflow prevention devices that can be installed in plumbing systems. A backflow preventer is simply a device that’s designed to safeguard potable water supplies from contamination that results from backflows.

Why is it important to have one installed in your home?

As you may know, a backflow occurs mainly because of cross-connections within your plumbing system. A cross-connection is any potential or actual link between a water supply system and a wastewater system. Such include pipes, valves and even fixtures. The thing is, cross-connections are integral parts of plumbing systems whether residential, commercial or industrial. These connections function properly through air gaps in the system or through backflow preventers. That said, whenever something goes wrong such as an abrupt loss of water, or the pressure drops, a pipe bursts or freezes or even an unusual high demand of water arises, your plumbing system ends up at risk of a possible backflow.

But, if you have a reliable prevention device installed, you won’t have to worry at all. It will ensure that the wastewater from your drain lines will flow as it should be instead of getting into your potable water lines.

We hope that you learned a lot from our blog post for today! Hydro Jetting – A Plumbing Solution With Hydro Power

A Plumbing Solution With Hydro PowerOops. Someone uses the bathroom and they have to wade through 2 inches of water to get out. You don’t think much of the problem, because, after all, the house has been like that for years. You’ve always had slow moving drains. But beware! This can be an indication of another more serious issue – and you ay need to call in your local Miami Dade County Florida plumbing professional.

What Can You Do About Drains that Constantly Clog?

I suspect the blockage occurs somewhere beyond the trap, because washing machine water sometimes comes out the bathtub drain. I have used foaming and non-foaming drain unblockers. This has just been money down the drain. I’ve also tried a plunger and a snake, neither of which have worked.P

Is there something else I can try or is it time to call a professional?

Slow drains can be a result of many things including slow draining sewer pipes. But what are you supposed to do about the problem, certainly not use a drain cleaner, this can cause even more problems; issues like corrosion, pipe leaks and more.

No, you don’t want to fix it yourself. You should first call in an experienced plumber  and have him inspect the problem. A simple hydro jetting process could solve the issue. And then, goodbye, slow draining pipes.

Hydro-jet cleaning

Hydro-jet cleaning is a method of cleaning with high pressure streams of water to remove build up and debris in tanks and lines. This process may best be compared to power washing which has also gained popularity as a means to clean driveways, homes, streets, commercial vehicles and more.

How Do I Get It Done?

If you think Hydro-jet cleaning is an option for you , your best option is to contact a South Florida plumbing repairman. This is not a project you want to do yourself, and instead, you should get it done by a professional plumping expert. Slow flowing drains are a real pain, but you don’t have to live with the problem any longer. New technologies allow for new repairing methods, and Hydro-jet plumbing solutions is one of these effective methods of cleaning drains of all sorts of debris.

Your Angels Camp Plumber Shares How To Install A Garbage Disposal

Angels Camp plumberDid you know that that food waste amounts to 10 to 20 percent of household waste in the United States? In fact, they are an issue when it comes to the municipal garbage disposal. And since food scraps are inevitable components of public waste, the home garbage disposal system was invented. It’s a device that’s electrically powered to grind food waste into smaller pieces so that they can then travel into the drainage pipes and then disposed into a home’s septic tank system or the local sewage treatment facility. The garbage disposer truly has a lot of environmental benefits as much as they also make our lives more convenient. So if you are planning to have one installed in your sink or if you need to replace your current machine, let us share this DIY guide with you!

1. Detach the drain pipe and the strainer from the sink. If you have a two-bowl sink, just remove the drain pipes and the strainer from the bowl where you’ll attach your garbage erator.

2. Form a snake shape with your plumbers’ putty by rolling it between your hands. Run it along the base of the machine’s flange that is included in the package. Place the same flange in the drain hole where you removed the strainer and the pipe. Secure it.

3. Attach the gasket and the mounting rings on the flange. There’s supposed to be two: upper mounting ring and lower mounting ring. Once they’re in position, attach the retaining ring, too. Secure the screws using your reliable screwdriver. Trim the excess putty that’s squeezed out from the connection and clean your sink.

4. Connect the garbage disposal system to the flange by following the user’s manual and installation guide that came with it.

5. There’s a discharge opening located at the side of the garbage disposer. Attach the discharge tube to it by utilizing a gasket or washer that’s included in the package.

6. Install the drain pipe once again. If you have a two-bowl sink, simply utilize a single P-trap by running the discharge tube from the garbage erator to a T in the drain pipe.

Important Tips Before Installation:

Don’t forget to wear protective clothing such as gloves and dust mask. Also make sure that the power is off before installation to prevent accidents. Before usage, it is wise to have a professional check on your work. This will ensure that you’ve installed the system correctly.

Arnold City Plumbing Tips For Spring Cleaning

Arnold City plumbingWe all have heard the saying that spring is a time for new beginnings. Indeed, it is a season of growth, color and life. And from this, we have coined the concept of spring cleaning. We spend hours if not days cleaning the house thoroughly regardless if we’re actually living in a cold area or the otherwise. Because it is spring and the weather is fair, we spend our time productively by doing a general and heavy-duty home cleaning. We re-arrange the furniture or get rid of things that we don’t need. Some even repaint or start home improvement projects. However, we want to know one thing. Do you even bother to check your plumbing? We hope so! Here’s a short list of tasks you might want to follow!

1. Check your taps for leaks. And when we say taps, we mean all of them. Check your kitchen faucets, outdoor faucets, tub faucets. Try them out and observe if there are leaks. If there are, have them repaired. You surely do not want to incur high fees on your utility bills moreover waste water.

2.  You have to find out if the cold season has caused burst or broken pipes. If it has, then you should have the affected pipes repaired.

3. Inspect your water heating system. Look around for signs of corrosion, moisture or leaks. Is it still heating water in a rate that it’s supposed to? If not, you might want to have it checked. Also remember to lower down the temperature. Since the weather’s no longer that cold, heating will no longer be difficult for the machine.

4. Make sure your water supply valves are working. Test them out by turning them on and off. Doing so will prevent them from getting stuck.

5. Clean your shower head. It is not impossible that debris may have built up in the past few months. Get rid these mineral deposits by using vinegar.

6. If you have a sump pump at home, test it. Pour water and then turn the pump on to ensure that it works just fine.

7. Install flood alarms. If you live in an area that’s flooded frequently, now is the perfect time to install your flood alarms.

8. Inspect your gutters and downspouts. It’s possible that animals may have taken shelter in them during the winter so you have to make sure that they’re no longer staying there.

9. Install drain screens and strainers if you don’t have any. They’ll prevent clogs which will prevent a lot of inconvenience and unwanted expenses.

Your Sonora Plumber Gives Tips On How To Fix Low Water Pressure

Sonora plumberYou wake up early to get ready for work only to find out that the stream of water is too little for you to take a bath comfortably. You can’t even prepare breakfast because the kitchen tap is merely dripping. You use the toilet and apparently, you have to fill the pail for an hour so that you can flush your ceramic throne. Quite an inconvenience, isn’t it?! What you’re experiencing is low water pressure or low flow. And do you know what causes such an annoying problem? Well, there are many things. It could be because of mineral deposit build-up; malfunctioning water valves; a leak somewhere in your plumbing system; a nasty clog or pressure regulators that must be configured. To help you put an end to the issue, let us share this troubleshooting guide with you.

1. Check your fixtures’ aerators first. Hard water contains minerals that can accumulate over time. Make sure that there aren’t build-ups in your faucets or showerheads. If cleaning them doesn’t resolve the problem, double check the supply valve or the piping.

2. If the problem is coming from a single tap, observe it. Is it corroded? If it is, then replacement may be the solution. You can also disassemble it to check if it has loose or broken parts.

3. In most instances, supply valves turn accidentally. This is normal especially if the pressure is naturally high in your plumbing system. It might have moved or turned off without you knowing it. Turn it and see if it makes any difference.

4. Clogs in your supply pipes may also result to low flow. Clogs may be caused by objects that get into the system, minerals that build up, roots that obstruct the lines or even organisms such as algae or mold. If cleaning out your faucet heads and shower heads don’t alleviate the situation, jetting may be the answer.

5. A broken pressure regulator may also lead to low water flow. However, you might want to seek the help of a professional right away because they’re the ones who are skilled to diagnose and fix this problem.

6. Low pressure from the main water source is also another factor to consider. If your plumbing system at home is okay, you might want to get a pressure gauge and check the water pressure. If it is low, call your water provider so that they can verify the cause of the inconvenience and have it fixed if they’re responsible.

7. When all DIY troubleshooting fail, call your trusted plumbing professional.

A Plumbing Maintenance Checklist From Your Trusted Jamestown Plumber

Jamestown plumberYou rely on your plumbing everyday: whenever you take a bath; whenever you answer the call of nature; whenever you cook food for your family; whenever you clean the house or your car; whenever you bathe your pets and many more. And because you rely on it, it is only necessary that adequate and proper care is due. Do you know that consistent and prompt plumbing maintenance can do wonders for your home? A simple cleaning of your toilet every week; annual flushing and draining of your water heater tank or preventing food items from going into your drain can thwart the onset of plumbing problems and steer you away from unwanted repair expenses.  To help you care for your plumbing system, let us share with you these indispensable tips!

1. High pressure isn’t good for your plumbing system. It may stress out your plumbing lines, cause high levels of mineral deposits and may even result to pipe bursting. To ensure that the pressure is right, measure it using a pressure gauge or have it checked by a professional.

2. Garbage disposal systems are sensitive pieces of equipment that make your life in the kitchen a lot easier. Take good care of it by not throwing in large pieces of food items or objects. Also remember not grind hard objects such as metal or wood. Note that it’s only for biodegradable items which are easily broken down into smaller pieces and can decompose.

3. When cleaning drains or ridding them of clogs, only use natural remedies instead of toxic cleansers. Excessive and frequent use of harsh chemicals may destroy your pipes.

4. Hard water may cause debris buildups in your plumbing systems and faucets are no exception. Check their aerators once in a while to ensure that debris are removed regularly.

5. Leaks don’t pose big problems unless neglected. When you notice leaking under your kitchen sink, in the walls, in the basement, in your toilet or anywhere else in your house, attend to it right away. Doing so will not only save you from shelling out more money on utility expenses but also thwart the possibilities of graver damages and unreasonable repair costs.

6. Flushing your water heater tank annually or even twice a year will not only lengthen its life span. Doing so will also make it work more efficiently.

7. Regular septic tank cleaning is recommended. Seek the help of professionals to have it pumped out every three to four years or even more depending on your household needs. Avoid flushing objects down the toilet such as sanitary napkins, soap or even toilet paper.

How To Repair Different Types of Faucets

faucet repairs sonoraWe’re pretty sure that you have experienced having leaky faucets, continuously flowing taps or broken spigots at home especially if you’ve been using the same one for such a long time already. If you haven’t, then you’re definitely a lucky homeowner. Although leaks, continuous flows, lose threads and broken faucets aren’t that big of a problem, they still need to be attended to because you rely on them every day. However, you should know that there are several types of faucets and each of them requires a slightly different way to get repaired. Since every kind is comprised of unique parts and designed variedly, you’ve got to have adequate know-how to be able to succeed in DIY plumbing repairs. Let us help you through our blog post for today.

Different Types of Faucets And How To Repair Them

1. Cartridge-Type Stem Faucets

These kinds of faucets have rubber washers and springs. You can replace them by detaching the cartridge out of the tap’s body and then removing the spring and washer. Once they’re out, insert the new parts and carefully align the cartridge again. When it’s already perfectly positioned into the slots, secure it.

2. Faucets With Rubber Seat Rings

These types of faucets use a rubber seat ring instead of a washer. Remove the ring from the faucet stem and using your reliable pliers to hold the body, unscrew the threaded center part that secures the seat ring. Detach the sleeve and insert a new seat ring. Re-assemble the faucet back to its original setup.

3. Faucets With Metal Discs

These types don’t have washers. Instead, they make use of two metal discs that allow water to flow through the system. When this kind of faucet leaks, drips or malfunctions, the valve assembly must be changed.

4. Faucets With Built-In Seat Rings In The Stem

These kinds of spigots also have washers but their seat rings are built in to their stems. To repair this kind of faucet, simply unscrew the stem nut from the stem base. Remove the metal discs and the washer retainer that’s equipped with a rubber washer. Install the new washer into the retainer and assemble it back.

5.  Faucets With Rubber Diaphragms

While there are faucets that use rubber washers or metal discs, there are those that are equipped with rubber diaphragms to control the water. Just remove the stem using your handy pliers. You’ll find a rubber diaphragm at the bottom of the stem which you’ll have to pry open with the help of a screwdriver. Replace the diaphragm and ensure that it’s positioned perfectly before reassembly.

6. Single-Lever Faucets

There are so many types of single-lever faucets and you won’t find it hard to repair them. Why? Because there are kits for specific brands and types of this tap. Just get the right repair kit from the hardware store and follow the instructions.

We hope that you learned a lot about fixing different faucet types from our blog post. Should you need faucet repairs in Sonora CA, just call a reliable Sonora plumber to help you! Instantaneous Water Heater Care & Maintenance Tips

instantaneous water heaterAn instantaneous water heater is truly a big investment for your home. It’s not a cheap appliance that you should just install, use and neglect. You might wonder why people still buy this kind of heating system even when the price isn’t very affordable for the masses. Well, for one thing, it saves a lot of money on operational cost. Since it only produces hot water by demand, it uses less energy. It’s also great for people who want to keep their basements spacious because the system doesn’t have a bulky tank. Last not but the least, when it is taken care of properly, it can last for about 25 years. It sounds very durable, right? With this said, let us share with you some tips on proper tankless water heater care and maintenance.

1. Watch out for the accumulation of mineral deposits on your hot water heater because such buildup may cause your system to overheat. You can prevent this by attaching a water softener to your water source which will be responsible for decreasing the level of calcium or lime accumulation.

2. Flush your instantaneous water heater once every 6 months or annually. You can either do this by yourself or you may ask a professional to do it for you to ensure that no problem will arise later.

3. To avoid freezing your system during cold weather, make sure that its anti-freeze feature is working properly.

4. If you use your clothes washer or dishwasher often, it is wise to just have a separate demand water heater installed for these appliances. This way, even if you use them at the same time as someone is taking a shower, the water heater won’t be pushed to its limit. The only issue is that you would have to shell out money on another heating system.

5. If you have a faucet or shower that doesn’t let out water well, check them. It’s possible that sediments have already accumulated in the shower head or aerator. Once you confirm this, clean them up and you may want to check on your water softener again.

What Methods Are Used On Underground Pipe Repair?

underground pipe repairUnderground pipe repair sounds like a difficult job. It is partly for the reason that an underground pipe is not as accessible as the ones attached to the walls of your house or lying around in the lawn. Since accessibility is challenging, application of repair solutions, quick fixes or even diagnosis require special tools and equipment. To be able to diagnose a buried pipe, plumbing companies use top-of-the-line cameras that allow plumbers to see inside the lines. Using high-tech camera locators, breaks, clogs, root intrusions and other problems are detected.

Signs That You Need A Pipe Repair

How would you know that a pipe repair is needed in your home? Well, there are plenty of signs to watch out for and they include but aren’t limited to these things below.

    • Your drainage overflows
    • Waste doesn’t get flushed down the drain
    • Water recedes slowly in your drains
    • There’s bad odor coming out from sewers, drains and pipes
    • Recurring blockages
    • You have rusted or broken pipes and dislocated joints
    • Your pipes are really old
    • Jet cleaning doesn’t get rid of the blockages

Types Of Underground Pipe Repair

There are several repair options when fixing an underground pipe. In general, it could either be trenchless or the traditional dig-and-replace method. Trenchless pipe repair doesn’t involve excavation or digging that often leads to damages in your house, your driveway or in your garden landscape. The traditional repair meanwhile involves excavation to be able to reach the pipe. Once it is accessible, replacement or repair may already be done.

When it comes to trenchless pipe repair, there are several options to choose from:

  • Cured-in-place-piping (CIPP) – The CIPP method involves pulling or inverting a tube made of polyester, fiberglass cloth or suitable material into a damaged pipe with the use of air pressure or water.
  • Pipe bursting – Pipe bursting is another trenchless technology that involves breaking the pipe from the inside in order to force the fragments outside and then drawing a new pipe in as a replacement.
  • Mechanical spot repair – This method involves applying fixes on damaged areas in order to give the pipe renewed stability.
  • Slip-lining – Slip-lining is used in repairing leaks or restoring the stability of existing pipelines. This method involves installing a smaller carrier pipe — usually made from PVC, fiberglass reinforced pipe or high density polyethylene — into a bigger host pipe, applying grout on the space between the two and then sealing the ends. This could be done in segments or continuously.

Why Gutter Maintenance is Vital for Your Home

gutter maintenanceGuess What? There is a big bad wolf lurking up on the edge of the roof. Well, not a wolf, but certainly a future home owner’s problem. I’m talking about those gutters and downspouts. You can ignore all you want, but unless you clean them out every six months or so, you can expect serious mold, mildew and other water damage issues in your California home.

Cleaning Gutters & Downspouts – Popovich Paint and Repair

Cleaning gutters, similar to cleaning windows, are just one of those maintenance items that most homeowners do not think about until there is a problem. In reality, you should have your gutters cleaned about every 6 months. The best times are in the spring when everything is starting to bloom and in the fall after the leaves have fallen. Spring time is the most crucial since the winter winds tend to blow a lot of debris around that typically winds up in the gutters and you want them to be clean if we have another wet spring and summer similar to last year. One clogged gutter can lead to many more problems for a home or business owner.

Cleaning Downspouts And Gutters

Most property owners do not realize the importance of downspout and gutter cleaning, but it can help avoid costly repairs in the future by keeping them clean. Downspouts and gutter cleaning is crucial in protecting your home from water damage caused by clogging since clogged gutters will cause water to overflow and run between the gutters a fascia. If the fascia continually gets wet and the water settles between the fascia and gutter, then it can eventually lead to rot, which can be very costly for replacing. Obviously, downspout and gutter cleaning will keep your gutters flowing and prevent water from backing up, causing this type of damage.

If it’s already too late and you are  experiencing some water damage, you need to call in some licensed professionals to do the job for you.  Remember, you want to make sure you call in a certified California plumber, otherwise you risk getting charged for a non existent problem.
